Social Medicine and Health Management

Overview

Department of Social Medicine and Health Management was founded in 1981, and it is currently led by Prof. Lu Zuxun. The department has a staff of 10 including 1 professor, 4 associate professors, 3 lecturers, and 2 senior editors. Among them, 3 are doctoral student supervisors and 4 are master student supervisors.

Our department teaches main courses such as “Social Medicine”, “Health Management”, “Health Education”, “Evidence-based Medicine”, “Design and Application of Medical Research Projects”, etc. At present, there are over 20 full-time master students and nearly 10 doctoral students enrolled in the department. Prof Lu Zuxun is the editor for the national higher education guidebook "Social Medicine" and editor for the National Health Commission planning textbook of "Social Medical Insurance".

In the past 10 years, the department obtained many research projects at the national, ministerial, and provincial levels, including 1 National Major Philosophy and Social Sciences Program, 3 sub-projects from the Ministry of Science and Technology of China, 8 projects from the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), 4 projects from the National Social Science Foundation of China, and more than 30 provincial and ministerial-level projects. The amount of research funding exceeded 20 million CNY.

Our main research areas include but not limited to community health services and family medicine, health care systems, standardized management of medication, social determinants of health. We have published over 200 SCI/SSCI papers in the past decade. The department has received 5 Second Prize for the Hubei province Science & Technology Progress Award, 1 Third Prize for the Hubei province Science & Technology Progress Award and 2 Second Prizes of municipal-level awards for Science and Technology. We have regular academic exchanges and collaborations with universities and research institutions from the United States, Britain, Canada, Germany, and Sweden.

The department also homes editorial office for the Chinese Journal of Social Medicine. In addition, our department is the main affiliation department for the Hubei Provincial General Practice Medical Training Center, and undertakes training tasks of general medical doctors.
