Zhuhai, China — On the morning of May 18, 2019, the Finals of the Second National Competition of Comprehensive Public Health Knowledge and Skills for College Students was officially launched at the Zhuhai Campus of Sun Yat-Sen University. After one day’s intense competition, the team from our school won the Special Prize with Outstanding Performance, which was the highest award of this competition. In addition, the team also won three single awards for basic clinical skills, basic public health theory and public health case analysis. The school won the first prize last year, and a historical breakthrough has been made this year.

This competition was hosted by the Public Health and Preventive Medicine Teaching Steering Committee, Ministry of Education, and specially organized by Sun Yat-Sen University School of Public Health, Southern Medical University School of Public Health, Guangdong Provincial Center for Disease Control and Prevention, Guangdong Province Hospital for Occupational Disease Prevention and Treatment, and Zhuhai Center for Disease Control and Prevention, and sponsored by China Biotechnology Co., Ltd.

The theme of this session was "paying equal attention to theory and practice, integrating preventive and clinical medicine". As the organizing committee pointed out, the purpose of the competition was to promote education reforms to solve the problem of disconnection between theory and practice, and to enhance the ability of graduates to provide public health services.

A total of 128 preventive medicine undergraduates from 32 universities participated in the competition. The semi-final adopted the form of "site assessment", which assessed contestant’s basic clinical skills, individual protection, sample collection and preservation, on-site detection, sanitary treatment and other basic public health operation skills.

After fierce competitions, 12 teams entered into the finals, of which the content included the basic theory of public health, case analysis and data analysis. In the end, the organizing committee awarded 1 special prize, 3 first prizes, 6 second prizes, 20 third prizes and 6 single prizes (2 teams for each).

The secret of the success lies in the preparation and routine accumulation. The school has continuously emphasized on practical skills and incorporated into the education curriculum. We paid special attention to the competition and invited many experts from the Hubei Provincial Center for Disease Control and Prevention, the Wuhan Union Hospital and professors from the school to train the team members. All the team members have learnt and worked extremely hard in the past several months.

Moreover, the organizing committee also gave awards to the 2019 College Student Health Science Publicity Works, twotwo from our school, "growth umbrella hotline -- focusing on hot issues of children's health" and "family doctor -- health may be within reach", won the third prize.

Congratulations to all the team members, Li Linyan, Lv Yanling, Lu Yinghong, Liu Wei, Zhang Jingwen, Li Dan, Cao Shuting, Guan Xin, Liu Bisen. Well done! We are looking forward to the next event!
