Wuhan, China — On January 18, 2018, the kick-off meeting of Towards an Air Toxic Management System in China Project 3 (The establishment for the national list of toxic and hazardous air pollutants) held in Wuhan Asia hotel.

Prof Zhang Gan, the principal investigator of the R&D project, briefly introduced the research background and content of the whole project. Prof. Wang Youjie, from the School of Public Health, who is in charge of the project 3, made a detailed presentation on the research content, research scheme and plan of the project 3.

Prof. Jiang Yiguo, from Guangzhou Medical University, Prof. Li Bing, from Guangdong Maternal and Child Health Care Hospital and Prof. Liang Shengwen, from Wuhan Environmental Monitoring Station were invited to attend the meeting. They raised questions and put forward some constructive suggestions. Prof. Jiang gave positive comments on the proposal of establish the list of toxic and hazardous air pollutants, and suggested that more attention should be paid to the hazardous, teratogenic and carcinogenic air pollutants. Prof. Liang provided some suggestions on sampling site, subject selection and sampling timing and sample size. She suggested that consideration should be given on sampling season or timing, sampling duration and sampling frequency. Dr. Li gave some advice on how to recruit research subjects efficiently. He suggested that it was important to inform the subjects of the results timely, and he also proposed that the combined effects of various pollutants in the list should be considered.

After the meeting, on January 19, the research group and the cooperative unit had a special discussion on the topic of sampling and health data sharing.

Through this meeting, the experts and representatives exchanged the views and suggestion on the project 3, and gave evaluable opinions to improve the research.
